A Jordaan canal filled in during the 19th century and now a wide residential street. On 25 July 1886, police tried to stop the game of palingtrekken — eel-pulling, in which a live eel was suspended over the water on a rope and contestants tried to grab it from a moving boat — on the bridge at Zaterdagse Brug. The crowd refused to disperse. Three days of fighting followed; the army was called in. Twenty-six people died, 136 were wounded. A plaque on the bridge marks the spot; the street otherwise gives no sign of it.
