A 90-minute walk from Dam Square into the heart of the Jordaan, one of Amsterdam's most photogenic neighborhoods. Head west along the canals, passing the Anne Frank House on Prinsengracht, then wander into the narrow streets and along the smaller canals that define the Jordaan.
Highlights along the way include the Torensluis Bridge (the city's widest), the Homomonument on Westermarkt, and the peaceful courtyard of Sint-Andrieshof at Egelantiersgracht 107 (open weekdays). Nearby, Electric Ladyland at Tweede Leliedwarsstraat 5 claims to be the world's only museum of fluorescent art -- a genuinely weird little place worth a look.
The walk ends around Egelantiersgracht, a quieter canal lined with houseboats and leaning brick facades. From here you're well placed to duck into one of the Jordaan's many brown cafes for a beer.
