Sint Andrieshofje

Behind a door at Egelantiersgracht 107, a corridor lined entirely in blue Delft tiles leads into a courtyard of whitewashed houses around a 17th-century pump. Founded in 1617 by a cattle merchant's bequest for poor Catholic widows, it is the oldest surviving hofje in Amsterdam after the Begijnhof. There were originally 36 dwellings for 66 women, each expected to maintain good conduct and attend church. The courtyard is publicly accessible on weekday mornings; the tile passage alone is worth pausing in.
