De Naald (The Needle)

A 23-metre sandstone obelisk on the Zwolseweg, halfway between the town centre and Paleis Het Loo. It was put up in 1844 to commemorate the silver wedding anniversary of William II and Anna Pavlovna, who used it as a milestone on their carriage drives from the palace to the town. The shape is meant to recall the obelisks that Anna would have known from her childhood in Saint Petersburg.

A small monument that is easy to miss but neatly fixes the long historical thread that ties Apeldoorn to the Dutch royal family: most of the town between the obelisk and the palace grew up specifically to serve Het Loo.
