Bouvigne Castle

Bouvigne Castle stands at the southern edge of the Mastbos forest, a few kilometres from the Breda city centre in what was once the village of Ginneken. The current building dates largely from the 16th and 17th centuries — a square water castle with corner towers, surrounded by a moat and a formal garden.

The interior is not open to the public on a regular basis, but the grounds and exterior are accessible. The castle makes a good endpoint for a walk or bike ride through the Mastbos, which is one of the largest planted forests in the Netherlands. The combination of the forest trails and the castle makes for a solid half-day excursion from the city centre.

A story
Bouvigne served as a hunting lodge for the House of Nassau, the same dynasty that produced William of Orange, founder of the Dutch Republic. The estate passed through several centuries of aristocratic ownership before the province acquired it in the 20th century to preserve it as a monument.
