The Admiraliteitshuis — the Admiralty House — is the finest historic building in Dokkum's town centre, a well-preserved 17th-century structure that reflects the town's former importance as a naval base for the Frisian Admiralty.
Dokkum was one of five cities in the Dutch Republic that maintained an Admiralty board, responsible for raising funds, building ships, and administering the Dutch naval presence in Frisian waters. The town's position on the navigable channels of northeastern Friesland made it strategically important. At its peak, the Dokkum admiralty maintained a small fleet and a considerable bureaucratic establishment.
The building's facade — characteristic Dutch Renaissance style with stepped gables — is the best example of its era in the town. It now houses local government offices, but the exterior is visible from the main canal and makes for an attractive photograph. The surrounding canal area, with its stone quays and bridge, gives the best sense of what Dokkum looked like at the height of its commercial importance.
