Dokkum's old fortifications are among the best preserved in the Netherlands — a complete ring of earthwork bastions, gates, and water-filled moats that encloses the historic town centre. Walking the circuit, which follows the top of the earthworks and the canal towpaths, takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace.
The star-shaped layout — typical of Dutch Renaissance military engineering — is most legible when walked rather than seen from a map. Each bastion juts out at a different angle; the water between the inner and outer earthworks reflects the sky and the trees that line the banks. The walk passes both windmills (De Hoop and Zeldenrust), several canal bridges, and the Bonifatius Chapel just outside the walls.
This is the best introduction to Dokkum's historic character. It requires no entrance fee and is accessible year-round. The walk is flat and easy; a map from the tourist office marks the key points.
