Getting There

Giethoorn is well connected by public transport from the two nearest cities. From Amsterdam, take a direct train to Steenwijk (approximately 90 minutes); from Steenwijk, bus 72 runs to Giethoorn village (about 20 minutes). Total journey time from Amsterdam is around two hours. From Zwolle the train to Steenwijk takes around 30 minutes, making Giethoorn a comfortable half-day excursion from there. By car, take the A28 motorway from Zwolle and follow signs for Giethoorn. Parking is available in designated car parks on the edge of the village. In summer parking is expensive and fills quickly on weekends — arriving before 10am makes a significant difference. Once parked, the village is reached on foot or by bicycle; cars are not permitted in the old canal district.
