Der Aa-Kerk

Second great church of Groningen, with a leaning steeple and famous organ

The other tower on the Groningen skyline. The Aa-Kerk stands just off the Vismarkt, named for the small River Aa it once overlooked. The first version was built in the 13th century; the steep red-brick tower as you see it now is from 1710, after the previous one collapsed twice — first in 1671, then again less than a century later.

Inside is a second Schnitger organ, rebuilt by his son in 1702, considered one of the finest instruments in the country. The church is mostly used as a concert hall and exhibition space; check the door for what's on. The Vismarkt outside is one of the prettiest squares in the city.
