The Folkingestraat is Groningen's most interesting shopping street — a continuation of the route from the station over the Museum Bridge to the Vismarkt. Until 1945 it was the centre of the city's Jewish quarter; today it is lined with small galleries, independent shops, and a steadily growing number of restaurants. The street has been voted the best shopping street in the Netherlands more than once.
For mainstream brands, the Herestraat runs from the Grote Markt south to the station and covers the usual chains. The Saturday Vismarkt flea market is good for browsing, and Tuesday and Saturday bring fresh produce to the Grote Markt itself.
