Groningen punches above its weight for food, partly because of the student population and partly because the surrounding farmland supplies first-rate produce. Folkingestraat south of the Vismarkt is a strong stretch of small restaurants and delicatessens; the Pottebakkersrijge has a row of fine-dining options; and there is a cluster of cheap, lively spots around the Poelestraat for late-night eats.
The local speciality is eierbal — a deep-fried snack of egg in ragout — sold from cafeteria-style places like Holman or Smulhoek. For a proper sit-down dinner, the long-running Muller is the most reliably ambitious choice.
