Bold Mendini-designed museum on its own island

Address Museumeiland 1

An extraordinary building — a cluster of pavilions on its own little island opposite the central station, designed in 1994 by Alessandro Mendini with Coop Himmelb(l)au, Michele De Lucchi, and Philippe Starck. The yellow plinth and deconstructivist grey pavilion make it one of the most recognisable museums in the Netherlands. The collection runs from 17th-century Groningen painters through Chinese ceramics to contemporary art.
