Amsterdamse Poort

The last surviving medieval city gate of Haarlem, dating from around 1355. The twin-towered gatehouse straddles the road on the eastern edge of the old centre, where the road to Amsterdam once passed through the city walls. It is one of the oldest and best-preserved city gates in the Netherlands.

The gate is not a museum — you simply walk or cycle through it, as people have done for nearly 700 years. The surrounding area, along the Spaarne river, is pleasant for a stroll. The gate appears in several 17th-century paintings of Haarlem, and its silhouette has changed remarkably little since then.
