Leeuwarden's drinking scene clusters along the Doelesteeg and the Ruiterskwartier, the two short streets that constitute the city's small but enthusiastic nightlife strip. Term-time evenings — the city has around 25,000 students — push the volume up significantly.
For something quieter, the canal-side terraces along the Nieuwestad and Kelders are the place for a sunny afternoon beer. Order a Frysk Bier if you see it; the regional brewery in nearby Bolsward turns out a good range. Wijnbar De Knipoog has the best wine list in town.
