Leeuwarden's historic centre is small enough to cross on foot in twenty minutes. Most visitors will not need any other transport for sightseeing — the Oldehove, Fries Museum, Princessehof, and Grote Kerk are all within a few hundred metres of each other.
For longer trips, cycling is by far the easiest option: rentals from Wim Drost on the Vredeman de Vriesstraat or directly at the railway station. The flat Frisian countryside is made for cycling and an afternoon ride out to villages like Goutum or Snakkerburen is delightful. City buses run by Arriva cover the suburbs and the Cambuur stadium. Taxis and ride-share are available but rarely necessary in the centre.
