Shopping in Leeuwarden clusters in the lanes between the Nieuwestad, Wirdumerdijk, and Voorstreek — small independent boutiques alongside the usual Dutch chain stores. The Saturday market on the Wilhelminaplein and Zaailand is the best market in the north of the Netherlands: cheeses, smoked fish from the Wadden, Frisian sausage, fresh flowers.
Bookshop Van der Velde inside the Blokhuispoort is exceptional and has a strong Frisian-language section. For Frisian souvenirs that are not embarrassing, De Friesche Vlag and the Fries Museum shop are the places to look — silver work, ceramics from Makkum and Workum, and Frisian linens.
