Leeuwarden punches well above its weight for a Dutch provincial capital. The compact historic centre, enclosed by canals, can be walked in an afternoon, but the museums and the lopsided silhouette of the Oldehove tower reward a longer stay. Climb the tower, see Mata Hari at the Fries Museum, and watch a piece of road fly into the air at the Slauerhoffbrug.
