Standing in the square at the foot of the Oldehove, Us Mem is a life-sized bronze cow on a low plinth — and one of the most photographed monuments in the Netherlands. Frisian Holsteins, with their distinctive black-and-white pattern, are the world's most productive dairy breed and a source of regional pride. Us Mem stands as a deliberately understated tribute.
The cow is patient with selfies. A second bronze cow, Us Heit ("our father"), stands not far away on the Zaailand. Children clamber on Us Mem; tourists pose; locals walk past barely noticing. It is one of those quiet civic gestures that say something about a place — agricultural, unshowy, proud of the wrong things.
