The Groote Sociëteit is one of Nijmegen's oldest and most atmospheric cafés, occupying a grand historic building on the Grote Markt that has served as a gentlemen's club, social hall, and drinking establishment since the 19th century. The interior has the dark wood, high ceilings, and patina of a place that was never really modernised — comfortably worn rather than shabby.
