The current Centraal Station opened in 2014 — a Benthem Crouwel/MVSA/West 8 design with a great cantilevered wedge of a stainless-steel roof pointing toward the city centre. It is one of the most successful pieces of architectural civic theatre in the Netherlands: dramatic from the outside, calm and bright inside, and it has reanimated the area to the north of the historic centre that had been a 1960s urban dead zone.
Even if you are not catching a train, walk in: the high-ceilinged hall with its wooden ribs, the long underground passage to the metro and tram platforms, and the views back toward the city are worth twenty minutes. The big square out the front is a hangout in fine weather.
