Statue of Piet Heyn

This 1870 sandstone statue in Delfshaven honours Piet Heyn, the Dutch naval commander who captured the Spanish silver fleet in 1628. It has become controversial because the wealth he helped bring into the Dutch Republic was later tied to colonial expansion and the slave trade. The statue is a small sight, but it opens a much larger argument about how Rotterdam remembers its past.
