Museum de Gevangenpoort

A medieval gatehouse that served as a prison for seven centuries, now a museum of crime and punishment. The Gevangenpoort dates from the 14th century and held prisoners until 1828 — including political prisoners, debtors, and those awaiting torture or execution. The guided tour walks you through the cells, the interrogation room, and a collection of instruments of punishment that leaves little to the imagination.

The building sits on the Hofvijver, the ornamental lake in front of the Binnenhof, in one of the most genteel settings in the Netherlands. The contrast between the elegant surroundings and what happened inside the walls is part of the experience. Tours run on the hour and are guided only — no wandering freely, which adds to the atmosphere.

A story
In 1672, an enraged mob dragged the brothers Johan and Cornelis de Witt from this prison and lynched them on the Plaats outside. Johan de Witt had been the most powerful man in the Dutch Republic. The mob partially cannibalised the bodies. The episode remains one of the most notorious events in Dutch history.
