Kunstmuseum Den Haag

The Kunstmuseum Den Haag — formerly the Gemeentemuseum — is one of the best art museums in the Netherlands, with a collection that runs from medieval applied art through Impressionism to the present day. The Mondrian collection is exceptional and justifies the trip on its own; nowhere else can you trace his development from naturalistic painting to pure geometric abstraction so completely.

Beyond Mondrian, the museum holds significant works by Monet, Picasso, and the Hague School painters who documented 19th-century Dutch life, along with an extensive decorative arts collection covering furniture, fashion, glass, and ceramics. The building itself — a brick-and-concrete structure in a park in the Statenkwartier neighbourhood — is a major work of early modern Dutch architecture. Located about 2 km northwest of the city centre; tram 17 from Centraal Station stops nearby.

A story
The museum holds the largest collection of Mondrian paintings in the world — around 300 works tracing his entire career from realistic Dutch landscape painting through the progressive abstraction of his Broadway Boogie-Woogie period. The museum's own building, designed by H.P. Berlage and completed in 1935, is itself considered one of the finest examples of Amsterdam School architecture.
