Scheveningen Beach

Scheveningen is the beach resort quarter of The Hague — technically a neighbourhood of the city, but in character a full-scale seaside resort with a long sandy beach, a historic pier, a casino, and a promenade lined with restaurants and cafes. In summer it draws huge crowds from across the western Netherlands; out of season it is quieter and not without charm, with the North Sea crashing in and the wind off the water.

The pier is the main landmark — a 19th-century structure rebuilt and modernised several times, now stretching several hundred metres into the sea with an observation tower at its end. The boulevard behind the beach runs for kilometres, and the beach itself is wide and well-maintained. The Kurhaus hotel, a grand 1885 building at the centre of the seafront, is worth seeing even if you are not staying there. From the city centre, the tram takes about twenty minutes.
