Zeeheldenkwartier

The Zeeheldenkwartier — the Sea Heroes Quarter — is one of the most pleasant residential neighbourhoods in The Hague, a grid of late-19th-century streets named after Dutch admirals and naval heroes, about ten minutes' walk west of the Binnenhof. The neighbourhood has become the unofficial food and bar district of the city, with an unusually high concentration of good independent restaurants, wine bars, and cafes along the main street of Piet Heinstraat and the surrounding blocks.

The character is local and unpretentious. There are no major tourist sights, which is precisely the point. Come here in the evening for dinner and drinks, or on a Saturday morning when the Albert Cuypmarkt analogue — a small but decent weekly market — sets up on the square. A good antidote to the formal government quarter around the corner.
