Vlissingen sits on the southern tip of the island of Walcheren, and the whole island is good cycling country. Middelburg, the elegant provincial capital, is 15 minutes away by train; Veere, a tiny 15th-century harbour town frozen in time, is a 20-km bike ride along the dikes.
Across the Western Scheldt, the Westerschelde Tunnel links Vlissingen to Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, the Dutch province south of the river — and onward to Bruges and Ghent in Belgium, both within an hour's drive.
