Vlissingen is built around its relationship with the sea. The Boulevard de Ruyter runs along the top of the dike and is the city's natural front room — looking out over the Western Scheldt at one of the busiest shipping channels in Europe. Behind it, the old town keeps a handful of 17th- and 18th-century buildings, the substantial maritime museum, and reminders of Vlissingen's most famous son, Admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
