muZEEum

The muZEEum tells the maritime history of Vlissingen and Zeeland through ship models, navigation instruments, paintings, and salvaged artefacts. It occupies a complex of restored buildings on the Nieuwendijk, including the old Lampsins house — one of the city's surviving 17th-century mansions.

Highlights include the de Ruyter galleries, a substantial collection of model ships and figureheads, and a hands-on section that works well for children. Allow two hours. The museum also runs the climb up the Gevangentoren ("prison tower") on the dike — included with admission — which offers the best view in the old town.

A story
The muZEEum's collection includes original silver loot from the 1628 capture of the Spanish silver fleet by Piet Heyn — one of the most famous Dutch naval victories, paid for partly in coins minted from this very metal in mints across the Republic.
