Vlissingen Wind Organ

The wind organ (windorgel) stands on the Westerschelde dike on the western edge of the Boulevard, exposed to the prevailing weather. There is no plaque and no formal viewing arrangement: you simply walk past, and on a windy day it plays itself.

The notes are low and atmospheric — closer to whale song than music — and on a strong southwesterly the whole structure can be heard from several hundred metres away. One of those quiet, slightly strange public artworks that travellers tend to remember from a trip.

A story
The wind organ is a wood-and-bamboo sculpture installed on the boulevard at the western end of town — a row of 27 vertical tubes, each cut to a different pitch. The piece sings, hums, or moans depending on the wind direction and strength, sometimes producing eerie harmonic chords, sometimes nothing at all.
