The Grote Kerk, dedicated to St. Catharina, is a late-Gothic hall church built in the 15th century and the architectural anchor of Wageningen's small historic centre. The tower is the most prominent feature in the town skyline, visible from the Rhine river to the south.
The church was heavily damaged by German bombardment in 1944 and partially rebuilt after the war. The interior is spare by Dutch Protestant standards — most of the original Catholic furnishings were lost either to the Reformation or to wartime damage — but the Gothic nave and the proportions of the space are worth a look. The square in front of the church (the Markt) is where the weekly Saturday market is held, making it the social centre of the town on market days. A few minutes' walk brings you to the traces of the old medieval moat.
