Saturday Market

Weekly market on the Markt square — fresh produce and a genuinely local crowd

The Saturday market on the Markt square is the best single hour you can spend in Wageningen if you happen to be here on a weekend morning. The combination of a large student and international researcher population, a strong local farming tradition, and a university focused on food science makes for an unusually good market by Dutch standards.

Expect fresh vegetables from local growers, artisan bread and cheese, fish from the river towns downstream, and street food reflecting the international mix of the university population — Indonesian snacks, Indian sweets, and West African dishes sit alongside Dutch stroopwafels and raw herring. The market runs from early morning until around 1pm, and the square fills with a mix of students, researchers from all over the world, and Wageningen locals. It is unpretentious and inexpensive.
