Day Trips

Bergen is the gateway to the fjords, and day trips from the city are spectacular. The most famous is the Norway in a Nutshell route — by train to Myrdal, the Flåmsbana railway down to Flåm, a boat through Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, and back to Bergen by bus or train. It is a full day and the scenery is genuinely extraordinary.

The Hardangerfjord, with its orchards, waterfalls, and the Trolltunga rock formation, is accessible from Bergen by bus or car. Voss, a two-hour drive, is the adventure sports capital of Norway — white-water rafting, paragliding, and skydiving all available.

Closer to home, the coastal boat to Rosendal (the Hardanger Baroniet manor house) or south to Stord offer quieter excursions. The boat trip to Lysøen and Ole Bull's island is the best half-day option.
