Bergen's best shopping is at the Fish Market (Fisketorget) — vacuum-packed salmon, dried fish, and local specialities make good gifts. The stalls around the harbour also sell woollen goods and jewellery. On a decent day it is a fine place to spend an hour; on a rainy day the covered market hall next to the outdoor stalls stays open year-round.
For more serious retail, the Galleriet shopping centre in the centre of town covers most practical needs. Bergen also has a handful of good independent design and clothing shops along Strandkaien and in the Bryggen alleyways. Norwegian wool sweaters (genuine bunad-style or modern design) are the signature purchase.
