Getting Around

Bergen's city centre is compact and easily walkable. From Bryggen to the fish market to the funicular station at the bottom of Fløyen is a fifteen-minute stroll. Most of what visitors want to see is within walking distance.

The Bergen Light Rail (Bybanen) runs from the airport through the city centre to the southern suburbs. It is the most useful public transport for reaching Troldhaugen (get off at Hop) and the airport. Tickets are bought at stations or via the Skyss app; a single journey covers the whole network and includes onward bus connections.

City buses cover the suburbs and can reach Gamle Bergen (buses 3, 4, 6) and the Ulriken cable car station (bus 2 to a shuttle). The city runs an integrated ticketing system — the same ticket works on buses, the light rail, and some boats.

Cycling is possible but Bergen's hills make it tiring; the light rail is more practical for most distances. The city does have a bike-share scheme.

Taxis are expensive — a short journey across town will cost more than most visitors expect. Use them sparingly.
