Aass Bryggeri

Norway's oldest brewery has operated from the same riverside site in Drammen since 1834. Aass Bryggeri — the name rhymes, approximately, with "boss" — produces a range of lagers, bocks, and seasonal beers that are widely available in the city's bars and restaurants. The brewery itself is a handsome collection of nineteenth-century industrial buildings along the Drammenselva, and guided tours run during summer months, taking you through the malt rooms, brewing floors, and cellars.

The brewery shop sells the full range including bottled versions of the bock and the Christmas ale, both of which are worth picking up. If you find the Julebock (Christmas bock) available, it is by some distance the most interesting beer in the range — dark, malty, and not especially subtle. The riverside setting, with the old brick buildings reflected in the water, is one of the more atmospheric spots in Drammen.

A story
Aass Bryggeri has been producing beer continuously since 1834, making it Norway's oldest active brewery. The name, pronounced approximately like "oss," causes predictable amusement among English-speaking visitors, which the brewery has embraced rather than apologised for.
