Drammen's most talked-about feature is a road that disappears into the side of a mountain and emerges — after six dizzying spirals inside the rock — at a viewpoint 160 metres above the city. The Spiralen tunnel was completed in the early 1960s and remains one of Norway's strangest pieces of infrastructure. Driving through it is disorienting in the best way: the rock face is only inches from your window, there is no daylight, and by the time you exit you have no clear sense of which direction you are facing.
The view from the top is the reward. On a clear day you see the Drammensfjord, the city below, and the forested hills stretching toward Oslo. There is a small cafe and a lookout tower. You can also walk back down through the tunnel — it takes about twenty minutes — or take the forested trails that wind across the ridge. In winter the top can be snowy while the city below is wet and grey, which adds to the surreal quality of the place.
