Bragernes Church

The tall yellow-brick steeple of Bragernes Church dominates the Bragernes side of Drammen and can be seen from almost anywhere in the city centre. The church was built in the 1870s in a neo-Gothic style, replacing an earlier structure that burned down. Its position on a slight rise above the main square gives it a commanding presence even in a city that is not particularly religious by modern Norwegian standards.

Inside, the church is lighter and airier than its solid exterior suggests. The wooden gallery, the painted ceiling, and the large organ are the highlights. The square in front of the church, Bragernes Torg, is the social hub of the Bragernes neighbourhood — market stalls appear here on weekends, and the benches fill up in summer. The church is open to visitors outside service hours and admission is free.
