Å

Å (pronounced like the English "Aw") sits at the very end of the E10 highway — the southernmost village in Lofoten, and the point at which the road simply stops. There is a car park, a small quay, and a cluster of historic buildings, and that is everything. The name means "stream" in Norwegian; it is one of the shortest place names in the world.

The village is worth the drive for its completeness: the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum and the Lofoten Stockfish Museum are both here, making Å a compact open-air window into how Lofoten fishing communities worked for centuries. Standing on the quay at the end of the road, looking south across the Moskenesstraumen towards the open Arctic Ocean, has a genuine sense of finality to it.
