Svinøya

Svinøya is the historic heart of Svolvær — a small peninsula jutting into the harbour that contains some of the oldest buildings in town. During the 19th century it was the main trading centre, and several of the original rorbu (fishermen's cabin) complexes survive, converted into accommodation and restaurants but still recognisable in their yellow timber construction.

The painter Gunnar Berg grew up here; his gallery occupies one of the historic buildings near the waterfront. The view back across the harbour toward the mountains from Svinøya's outer edge — especially in evening light, with the Goat's twin horns visible above the rooftops — is the classic view of Svolvær that most visitors come away with.

It is a short walk from the main harbour and easily explored in 20 minutes, though longer if you stop for food or a beer at one of the restaurants that have taken over the converted rorbu buildings.
