The Espolin Gallery at Storvågan holds a large collection of work by Kaare Espolin Johnson (1907–1994), one of Norway's most distinctive graphic artists. Espolin was blind in one eye, worked primarily in charcoal and lithograph, and spent decades documenting the fishing life of the Lofoten coast in images that are simultaneously documentary and dreamlike. His dark, densely worked figures hauling nets or sitting in rorbu cabins capture the physical and psychological weight of the winter fisheries better than almost any photograph.
The gallery building was purpose-built and is a good example of how well arts infrastructure has been developed in Lofoten relative to the size of the population. The collection is substantial — not a token room of prints, but a proper retrospective spanning Espolin's career from the 1930s onward.
Storvågan also hosts the Lofoten Museum and the aquarium within a short walk, making this corner of Kabelvåg worth an extended morning or afternoon.
