The Lofoten Aquarium at Storvågan focuses on the marine life of the surrounding waters: the cod, halibut, and wolffish of the Vestfjord, as well as seabirds and seals in outdoor tanks. It is a modest-sized facility but well-suited to the location — everything in it lives in the sea just outside.
The seal pond is the highlight for most visitors, especially with children. The aquarium also explains the life cycle of Atlantic cod in more detail than you might expect, given that the entire economy of Lofoten historically depended on cod and continues to depend on it to a significant degree today. Stockfish (wind-dried cod hung on wooden racks) is still a major export, and the aquarium puts the biology behind that industry in accessible terms.
The aquarium sits alongside the Lofoten Museum and Espolin Gallery in Storvågan, making the cluster of attractions a natural half-day destination if you have a car or bike.
