Orca Watching

From October to January, Atlantic herring move into the fjords around the Lofoten Islands and Vesterålen, followed by killer whales in numbers that can reach into the dozens. Svolvær is one of the main bases for whale watching in this period: the fjords are close, the boat operators are experienced, and on good days pods of orca can be observed from very close range as they herd herring into tight bait balls at the surface.

The herring are the key variable. When the fish arrive in Raftsundet or the fjords around Svolvær, trips can be spectacular. When the fish are further north or east, operators may travel up to an hour to find the whales, and sightings are less guaranteed. Most operators offer rebooking if conditions are poor, and the shoulder months of November and December tend to be the most reliable.

RIB boats offer the closest approach and are the most popular format; larger, heated boats suit those more interested in comfort than immediacy. Either way, bring serious waterproof gear — the Arctic Ocean in November does not forgive light layers.
