Tønsberg Cathedral (Tønsberg domkirke) serves as the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Tunsberg — one of the oldest dioceses in Norway, with roots going back to the medieval church councils held in Tønsberg. The current building dates primarily from the 19th century, built in the neo-Gothic style that was fashionable for church restorations across Scandinavia at the time. It stands in the town centre, close to the pedestrian street, and is open to visitors outside service times.
The setting reflects the city's long role as an ecclesiastical centre. Tønsberg was a gathering point for national church councils in the Middle Ages, and the town's religious and political importance are intertwined throughout its history.
