Tønsberg's main draws are its Viking and medieval history, the waterfront, and the wider Vestfold landscape. Slottsfjellet is the obvious starting point — the hill is a short walk from the town centre and offers good views from the tower. The fortress ruins are modest but evocative. Down at the waterfront, the Vestfold Viking Museum covers both the region's whaling history and the Oseberg ship burial, one of the greatest Viking-age finds in Norway. For those with more time, the burial mounds at Borre and Munch's house at Åsgårdstrand make compelling half-day trips.
