Kaikanten — roughly, "the quayside corner" — is the most popular outdoor drinking spot in Tvedestrand, a bar with a broad terrace that juts out towards the water and catches the afternoon sun from mid-afternoon onwards. In July the tables are nearly always full by five o'clock, a mix of sailors from the guest marina and townspeople who have made this a reliable summer ritual. The drinks list is straightforward: Norwegian lagers, a short wine list, the usual spirits.
The atmosphere is easy and social, the kind of place where strangers at neighbouring tables end up talking. There is no particular pretension to the place — the draw is simply the location, the light and the warm evenings that make sitting outside in Norway feel like a gift.
