The Old Customs House

One of the older buildings on the Tvedestrand waterfront, the former customs house dates from the town's busy nineteenth-century shipping years, when Norwegian timber and iron moved through the harbour in substantial quantities. It has since been converted into a bar and cafe, and the thick timber walls and low ceilings give it a character that the newer waterfront buildings lack.

The atmosphere is cozier and more interior-focused than the quayside terraces, making it a good choice when the weather turns or for a later-evening drink. It tends to attract a slightly older crowd than the outdoor bars, and in winter and autumn it functions as something close to a proper local pub — one of the few places in town where you can reliably get a drink in the off-season.
