Kazimierz Dolny Castle Ruins

The castle ruins sit on a steep limestone bluff just above the town. They are a short, steep climb from the market square — fifteen minutes on the marked path. What remains is fragmentary: outer walls, the base of the keep, the cellars, and the lower section of the tower (the so-called Baszta) which is older than the castle itself and predates it as a watchtower.

Climb to the top of the Baszta for the best view in Kazimierz: the merchants' houses below, the bend in the Vistula, and on a clear day the Janowiec Castle on the opposite bank. A small fee is charged in season, and the site is open most daylight hours.

A story
King Casimir III the Great fortified the river crossing here in the mid-fourteenth century and gave the town its name. Local legend has it that he built the castle to be near his beloved, the Jewish girl Esterka. The castle's military life was short: it was sacked by the Swedes in 1656 during the deluge, and the ruined walls were never rebuilt.
