The Vistula Granaries

A handful of seventeenth-century grain granaries survive along the Vistula bank south of the centre — tall whitewashed stone buildings with steep red-tiled roofs, originally used to store the grain awaiting shipment downriver. At the trade's height the town had over 60 of these granaries; today, around a dozen remain.

The best preserved is the Mikołaj Przybyła granary, now home to a small natural history exhibit on the Vistula and its wildlife. The walk along the riverbank past the granaries is one of the most evocative things to do in town — flat, leafy and unrushed, with the cliffs on one side and the river on the other.
