Janowiec Castle

On the far bank of the Vistula stands Janowiec Castle, a partly ruined Renaissance castle built between 1508 and 1526. From a distance — say from Three Crosses Hill — it makes a striking silhouette on the bluff above the river. Up close, the walls are red-and-white striped sandstone, half restored and half left as romantic ruin.

In summer a small ferry (a prom) crosses the river between Kazimierz Dolny and the village below the castle, taking pedestrians, cyclists and, in calm conditions, cars. The crossing is short and the view of the river on a sunny day is the trip in itself. The castle museum is open most days from spring to autumn.
