Toy Museum

One of Europe's largest toy collections — better than it sounds

The Muzeum Zabawek i Zabawy on Plac Wolności holds about 50,000 toys from across two centuries, of which a few thousand are on permanent display. The chronological tour runs from 19th-century wooden Noah's arks and tin soldiers, through Bauhaus-era construction sets, the bright industrial production of the People's Republic, and into the recent past of Lego, Star Wars and Polish-made children's animation merchandise.

The reason this is one of the better small museums in Poland is the curating: the toys are presented in reconstructed period interiors — a Victorian nursery, a 1930s bourgeois apartment, a People's Republic flat in the 1970s — that turn a potentially flat collection into a sharp social history of childhood. Allow ninety minutes. Genuinely engaging for adults, and a refuge with kids on a wet day.
